trained in Hurricane Cutting for Palms. This is the process of cutting
most of the fronds leaving the tree looking like a carrot. This is the worst thing you can do to a Palm Tree. Palm Trees feed on nutrients created by browning fronds. The nutrients are transferred from the frond to the heart of the Palm. When you cut most of the fronds off including totally green fronds, you rob the nutrients and leave the the tree susceptible to mold, fungi, insects and other diseases. Moreover, by doing this, it causes narrowing of the palm trunk which is called "Pencil Topping" . Too much narrowing leaves the top of the palm prone to snapping off in high winds thus leaving a tree with no top. They call it a hurricane cut because it is supposed to prevent the top from flying but in actuality, this is the main cause of such a situation. Broward County actually fines tree companies for hurricane cuts because it is so bad for the tree but most companies still do it. The main reason tree companies do it is because it takes no skill. You can pretty much send anyone willing to go up high with a chain saw to cut a bunch of fronds, it takes skill and attention to detail to achieve the proper cut which is the 9 and 3 cut. (Reference to a clock's hours where all the fronds are level to the ground forming a nice semii circle.) Many untrained tree trimmers in South Florida perform the Hurricane Trimming as Homeowners and people in charge of tree care for their company don't realize it harms the Palm. Most Palms are very wind resistant. They are not harmed by high winds as easily as broadleaf woody trees are, yet, the myth continues that cutting most of the leaves of a Palm helps it survive a Hurricane when the total opposite is true. IT'S A FACT Hardwood trees that are properly pruned fall a lot less in high winds and hurricanes verses trees that are not. When your tree is properly pruned, we create an environment where wind passes through the tree verses hitting an almost solid wall of branches and leaves. We also remove branches that are weak, diseased or have the ability to snap easily. Likewise, as mentioned earlier, trees in the Palm Tree family that are overly pruned (too many green fronds removed) are much more susceptible to pencil topping and narrowing thus, much more susceptible to the top snapping off during high winds. Mulching: Palm Trees benefit from an 18 inch layer of mulch applied six inches away from the trunk and 2 to 6 inches thick. Use commercial sterilized mulch. Freshly ground tree mulch can contain the organism responsible for the lethal disease 'Ganoderma Butt Rot.' Dead Palm trees containing the deadly fungus 'Ganoderma zonatrum,' can be ground up into a fine looking but lethal mulch. Tools used in removing dead trees should be sterilized with rubbing alcohol (isopropyl alcohol) or hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), to prevent transferring the fungus to other palms. Mulching Dont's DO NOT place mulch above the lower stems of shrubs burying them causing them to rot. This will promote a disease known as ” STEM - ROT “.
